The OSU Wexner Medical Center South Campus Central Chiller Plant is prominently sited at a major western entry into The Ohio State University Main Campus and provides the Medical Campus with a long term solution for chilled water production and distribution.
The LEED Silver Certified building, designed by Ross Barney Architects, features glazed openings that are specifically located to frame views of the chiller equipment. Dichroic glass fins and boxes on the exterior that change in color with the movement of the sun and cast color-changing shadows onto polished modular precast concrete wall panels. The plant has an initial chiller capacity of 15,000 tons, expandable to 30,000 tons. To increase reliability, the plant has been equipped with an emergency power source to provide chilled water for critical operations during power outages.
As a consultant to the Architect of Record, Champlin Architecture, Lupton Rausch provided additional guidance to the design team, peer review of details, coordination with the construction team and stakeholders in the project and on site Construction Administration Services during the entire construction phase.
